Emotional support, improved sleep, reduced stress and anxiety, an enhanced sense of well-being, and relief from symptoms caused by illness or treatment are some of the benefits that complementary therapies can provide.
Therapeutic massage uses skilled touch to ease aches and pains, relieve tension, and promote a sense of well-being. Aromatherapy incorporates essential oils chosen by the therapist to enhance your treatment and provide added benefits. Reflexology focuses on relaxation and balance throughout the body by stimulating specific points on the feet. During this treatment, light pressure is applied to reflex points using the thumb and fingers, often with the aid of cream, to encourage a soothing and restorative experience.
Self-referrals can be made, as well as those from relatives, carers, and healthcare professionals. Once a referral has been received, a member of the team will contact the patient and/or carer to discuss and arrange the next steps.
Frequently asked questions
What happens after a referral is made?
+One of our trained therapists will complete an assessment, which will include questions about your health and how you are feeling at that moment.
Together you can choose a therapy that you will enjoy and one that will be both beneficial and suitable for you. Normally up to six treatments of between 30 and 60 minutes will be offered, however, this will be assessed according to need and may be extended.
Who will provide complementary therapy?
+All our complementary therapy practitioners working for the Hospice have successfully completed a diploma (or equivalent) in aromatherapy, massage and/or reflexology, and they are also registered with the Federation of Holistic Therapists (or equivalent) regulatory body. In addition, our complementary therapists have had specific training to provide support to people with advancing long term and life limiting illnesses, as well as their families and carers.
Where will the complementary therapy take place?
+Our complementary therapy service is based on the Health, Wellbeing & Rehabilitation department, but is available across all other Hospice services, including inpatients, outpatients, as well as in the community for those with very limited ability and / or have difficulty leaving their home.
How do I contact the complementary therapy team?
+If you wish to contact the team or if you need to cancel / postpone an appointment, you can get in touch with us, Monday to Friday, from 9am-5pm on 01282 440 110.
