Inpatient Unit


Pendleside Hospice’s 10-bed inpatient unit (IPU) provides short-term care to people aged 17 years and over, with advancing long term and life limiting illnesses.

Reasons for admission to the Inpatient Unit (IPU) include assessment and symptom control, end of life care, rehabilitation, and crisis support. Referrals can be made by patients, relatives, carers, and healthcare professionals.

The 10 single, ensuite bedrooms are designed to create a home from home feel, with patio doors opening out onto our beautiful gardens. For your comfort, we can alter your position in the profiling bed, at the touch of a button.

Bedroom features include; an ensuite bathroom (toilet and washbasin), electric profiling single bed, a choice of mattress (depending on your needs), a riser-recliner armchair, as mart TV, free WiFi, telephone and in some bedrooms, an inbuilt hoist.

Frequently asked questions

What should patients bring with them?

  • Medication in original containers
  • Comfortable day clothes, including suitable footwear (if they wish to change)
  • Night clothes, dressing gown and slippers
  • Toiletries
  • Small change for newspapers or items from the Hospice shop
  • Walking stick / frame, spectacles, dentures, hearing aids etc.
  • Details of any pending medical or hospital appointments
  • Dressings, catheter bags, continence equipment, nebuliser, if you have them

It is possible to bring electrical items, such as laptops and phone chargers, however, these will need to be electrically (PAT) tested by our maintenance team before use.

Please do not bring valuables or large amounts of money into the Hospice. We cannot accept responsibility for money or valuables kept in your bedroom, but they can be retained in our safe.

What are the visiting times?

We welcome friends, family and loved ones to visit patients during their stay with us.

Visiting times are between 2pm and 8pm, daily, as this allows patients to receive the care and rest they need. We ask visitors to avoid mealtimes unless they are actively assisting the patient. Children are welcome but must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Patients who are in the last days of their life will be allowed visitors outside of the usual visiting times, and overnight accommodation may be available.

Are pets allowed to visit patients?

Pets are allowed to visit the Hospice, but this should be discussed with a member of the clinical team prior to the visit. Pets must also be supervised at all times.

What are the meals like?

A variety of meal choices will be offered to patients on a daily basis, with the opportunity to discuss preferences with our onsite chefs. Meals can be requested at any time, but our general mealtimes are:

  • Breakfast from 8am
  • Lunch 12noon-1pm
  • Dinner 5pm-6pm

Snacks, supper and prescribed supplement drinks can be requested at any time. We cater for all special diets and food allergies, but please make the staff aware of any dietary requirements when the patient is admitted.
